The third big wave to hit the gas industry since market liberalization and deregulation, followed swiftly by gas and power convergence, is e-business—or, in other words, another kind of convergence. This time it is between energy and the Internet. Internet technology promises to give the consumer unprecedented power, while at the same time affording suppliers unprecedented opportunities to improve efficiency and cut costs. Much has been said and written about the tardiness of the energy industry and utilities in adapting to the fundamental and far-reaching changes that Internet technology is bringing to the marketplace. The failure of traditional companies to integrate e-commerce into their operations has opened the door to new players, whose understanding of the technology has enabled them to gain a competitive advantage in the market. So is the energy sector going to stand on the sidelines and watch, or is it going to take a lead in the new revolution?
