An engineering process known as subsurface utility engineering (SUE) offers an advanced solution to help gas utilities locate underground utilities during or prior to construction or renovation activities. The process combines geophysics, surveying, civil engineering and nondestructive excavation technologies. Proponents claim it can provide accurate mapping of existing underground utilities in three dimensions to avoid unnecessary utility related downtime, eliminate unexpected conflicts with utilities, and enhance safety during construction. Using SUE services has become a routine requirement on highway and bridge design projects, and is strongly advocated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State Departments of Transportation.
