The winter of 2000-2001 proved a challenging one for America's energy consumers and natural gas utilities. Record cold temperatures, tightened natural gas supplies and consistently strong demand for natural gas all contributed to high prices for natural gas. In addition, prices for electricity, heating oil and propane each have increased significantly in the past nine months.In California, a shortage of electric generation plants, coupled with the unintended consequences of electric deregulation, created rolling blackouts and a financial crisis for the state's utilities. The impact on consumers has been profound: homeowners, business owners, manufacturers and power generators all have heightened awareness of the importance of a reliable, affordable, domestic energy supply to our economy and our national security. This record cold winter hearting season has established that continuing to meet America's growing demand for energy with adequate energy supply is a national issue.
