摘要

Continuing expansion of Australia's gas transmission/distribution grid, extension of natural gas service to Tasmania and developments in initiatives to exploit gas reserves in Papua New Guinea highlight Southern Pacific action.Duke Energy International is expected to start construction in December on its 468-mi (753-km) land and subsea, Victoria-to-Tasmania pipe line that will bring gas from Victoria, across the Bass Strait south to Hobart in Tasmania and west to Port Latta on Tasmania's north west coast.A contract was awarded in April 2001 to OneSteel for production of the pipe. Contract value was reported to be 100 million dollars. The Tasmanian government, which is obtaining right of way for the line, said it will award franchises for distribution and retailing of the natural gas during 2002.
