Coriolis metering technology is seldom used by natural gas pope line companies in the U.S. How-ever, this situation may change in the near future. The American Gas Association (AGA) Transmission Measurement Committee (TMC) has just published an Engineering Technical Note on Coriolis flowmeters intended for gas transmission and distribution pipe line service. The tech note provides a good overview of the current tare of the art of this technology and suggests that it may now be a viable option for metering gas pipe line flows. Coriolis flowmeters have been used successfully for decades to matter liquid flows. However, this technology is just coming to the fore for gas pope line applications.There are several reasons gas companies may find Coriolis meters appealing. The meters have no moving parts to wear out, have relatively low maintenance requirements, and can meter bidirectional flows. If their measurement performance and initial cost are at least comparable to competing measurement technologies, then they stand a good chance of gaining side acceptance with the gas industry. Another appealing aspect of Coriolis meters for gas pipe line applications is that they are a nice complement to ultra-conic flowmeters. Ultrasonic meters are finding broad application for custody transfer and check metering in pipe lines that are 4-in. diameter and larger. The 4-in. line size is the current practical lower limit for gas ultrasonic meters. The current upper-end line-size limit for Coriolis meters also is 4 in. in combination, these two technologies could cover the entire range of gas pope line applications. Several major gas meter manufacturers in United States already have both of these meter types in their product lines
