Several important events occurred last year which promise to redefine the character of the European continental gas market for good. In April, the European Parliament approved the Gas Directive, which is designed to encourage competition in the gas supply market by providing third-party access to the gas transmission system. In October, two major new international gas pipe lines came onstream: the UK-Continent Interconnector, between Belgium and the UK, and the NorFra pipe line, between Norway and France.
