Modulational instabilities in dispersion-flattened fibers

摘要

The nonlinear Schrodinger equation does not describe fast modulations adequately because it is based on a Taylor expansion in the frequency domain. In this paper, we study the effects of the entire modal dispersion curve and the frequency dependence of the nonlinear coefficients on the formation of modulational instabilities by using harmonic analysis. New regions of instability for dispersion-flattened fibers are found and characterized by this approach. The relation of these instabilities to the conventional modulational and four-wave-mixing instabilities is discussed.
