Rice cv. Koshihikari plants were grown in a culture solution with a high methane concentration at different temperatures. The conductance for methane diffusion was typically 2.0-2.2 times greater at 30鳦 than at 15鳦. When the solution temperature was increased from 15鳦 to 30鳦, methane conductance reached a maximum level higher than that when the temperature was kept at a constant 30鳦. The air temperature surrounding the top of the rice plant had a relatively small effect on conductance. Measurements of methane flux and methane concentration in soil water in a lysimeter rice paddy during 2 rice growing seasons showed that the conductance for methane transport was correlated with the soil temperature at 5 cm depth.
