Stomatal control of water use in olive tree leaves.

In 1995 in an orchard at Coria del Rio, Spain, 26-year-old olive cv. Manzanillo trees were given full irrigation, one third of full irrigation or were not irrigated. Under conditions of high vapour pressure deficit of the air (Da), the olive trees prevented excessive water loss by closing their stomata. Current-year leaves showed better stomatal control than did 1-year-old leaves. Highest values for stomatal conductance of H2O (g) were observed at relatively low photon flux densities (Ip), from about 500 鎚ol m-2 s-1, and there was also a proportional decrease in g with increasing Da, at least for values of up to approximately 3.5 kPa. Values of g were higher in the morning than in the afternoon for similar values of Ip and Da. Unirrigated olive trees recovered quickly after the dry season, showing values for leaf water potential and g similar to those of irrigated trees after just two days.
