One-year old pear cv. Abbe Fetel trees grafted on quince C rootstocks and grown in sand culture at the experimental farm of the University of Bologna, Italy, were given a generous supply of N fertilizer during the 1995 growing season, and were given1 g of labelled nitrate-N on each of 3 dates in spring 1996 (19 March (before bud burst), 11 and 29 April). Leaves, flowers and fruit were sampled on 5 dates between April 11 and May 13 and the recovery of labelled N used to distinguish the remobilization of N and the root uptake of nitrate. Remobilization of stored N accounted for most of the N present in leaves and flowers during blossoming. Remobilization of N ceased between petal fall and the beginning of fruit development. Root uptake of nitrate increased linearly over time and at the last sampling date, 55 days after bud burst, fertilizer N contributed approximately half of the total N recovered in both spur and shoot leaves, the remainder coming from remobilization. Flowers and fruits based their N metabolism more on remobilization than did leaves. This pattern of internal cycling of N is discussed in relation to fertilizer application strategies for pear trees.
