In a greenhouse pot experiment, seedlings of hazel (Corylus avellana) clone H219 were grown in non-sterilized soil, sterilized soil inoculated with T. melanosporum, or sterilized soil inoculated with T. melanosporum and sown with F. ovina. F. ovinareduced colonization of young hazels by T. melanosporum. Co-culture with F. ovina resulted in necrosis of hazel roots, leading to 33% plant mortality. The surviving hazels were poorly colonized by T. melanosporum and highly colonized by other symbionts.Roots of F. ovina did not seem to attract mycelium or to be infected by T. melanosporum. Relatively poor mycorrhizal colonization developed in non-sterilized soil containing native inoculum of T. melanosporum. Mycorrhization by T. melanosporum developedvery efficiently in sterilized soil inoculated with a spore suspension with relatively little colonization by competing symbionts.
