Zinc efficiency of oilseed rape (Brassica napus and B. juncea) genotypes.

In pot experiments, 22 rape and 3 B. juncea cultivars were grown on Zn-deficient soil with (+Zn) or without added Zn (-Zn). In a field trial in 1995 near Lameroo, South Australia, the 3 B. juncea cultivars and 7 rape cultivars were grown on a Zn-deficient soil with or without added Zn. In the pot experiments, Zn efficiency (ratio of shoot dry matter in the -Zn to shoot dry matter in the +Zn treatment expressed as a percentage) varied from 32% for Wuyou 1 for rape cv. 92-13 to 74% for Siren, while B. juncea efficiencies ranged from 43% for CSIRO-6 to 62% for Pusa Bold. Rape cv. Narendra, Dunkeld, Barossa, Oscar and Xinza 2 performed well under the -Zn treatment. Root dry matter accumulation was significantly higher in Zn-efficient genotypes. Zn efficiency (ratio of seed yield in -Zn to seed yield in +Zn expressed as a percentage) in the field experiment varied from 62% for Huashang 2 to 76% for Dunkeld. With few exceptions, the response of genotypes to Zn deficiency was similar in pot and field experiments. There appeared to be genetic control of Zn concentrations in tissues. Zn-efficient genotypes had a lower Zn concentration in roots and a higher Zn concentration in the youngest fully opened leaf blades, indicating a better transport of Zn. This, together with a higher Zn uptake, appeared to be the basis of expression of Zn efficiency.
