Activity of root-associated and root-released extracellular phytase was compared in barley cv. Alexis, Regatta, Marinka and Sonate grown in P-deficient nutrient solution under sterile conditions. The activity of root-associated phytase of all cultivars was about 10 times higher than that of root-released phytase. Marinka and Regatta showed significantly higher activity of the 2 enzymes than Alexis and Sonate. In general, there was a significant correlation between the activities of the 2 enzymes.
