Extracts and exudates of different parts of seedlings of the widely-nodulating Acacia seyal and Faidherbia albida and the non-nodulating A. greggii and A. brevispica were tested for their ability to induce a nod::lacZ fusion in a reporter plasmid which had been introduced into 25 rhizobial isolates of other legumes. The two non-nodulating species were found to lack neither the ability to produce potentially nod gene-inducing compounds nor the means to exude them into the rhizosphere. However, it was demonstrated, through the distribution of potentially inducing compounds within the plants and their exudates, that the components of tissue extracts did not necessarily reflect the components exuded into the rhizosphere.
