Evaluation of 15 potato varieties most widely grown in China for Resistance to Late Blight

China's 15 most widely cultivated varieties of potato were compared for late blight resistance in Xundian County, Yunnan (SW China), at an elevation of about 2500_m. The soil in the experimental plot is a yellow-red inceptisol. The trial was planted just before the primary potato growing season (May-October), which has an average precipitation of 900 mm and a temperature range of 12-24°C. Seed tubers were planted in a randomized block design in early April 2013, fertilized with ammonium bicarbonate,superphosphate, potassium sulfate and manure, and irrigated prior to emergence. Plots comprised 4 rows of 12 tubers each and were planted in three replicate blocks. Spacing was 0.8 m between rows and 0.3 m between plants. Percentage infection in each plot (experimental unit) was estimated visually and recorded weekly for four weeks, beginning on the first day that infection was observed in the field on Jul 2. Area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) values were calculated for each experimental unit and then converted to the 1-9 resistance scale of Yuen and Forbes (2009, Phytopathology 99:783-786), using cv. Favorita as the susceptible check, with an assigned score value of 9. ANOVA was used to test for a significant difference among varieties and means were compared with the LSD.
