Comparative studies on the nutritional and toxic composition of three varieties of Lesianthera africana.

The Etoi (bitter) variety possessed the best (P?.01) nutritional value (9.5% DM lipid, 14.9% DM protein, 350 kcal/100 g DM, Fe 1.1 mg/100 g DM, Ca 12.3 mg/100 g DM and P 48.0 mg/100 g DM and fiber 15.3% DM) but highest toxic components (mg/100 g: hydrogen cyanide 1.62; oxalate 17.6; glucosinolates 1630), which are far below toxic limits. The Ikot Abasi (riverine) variety was highly (P?.01) fibrous (18.1 mg/100 g DM) but low in minerals and trace elements. The Etinan (flavor-full) variety was moderately nutritious. The findings are discussed in relation to nutrient interactions and recommendations are made regarding dietetic use.
