(1) Themeasuredparticleverticalvelocityinthespoutasshown in Figs.2,3and8seemsnotreasonable.Thesameremarkappliesto other measurementspublishedbytheauthorsin Olazar etal.(1995) (Fig. 9)andin Olazar etal.(1998) (Figs. 4–6).Alltheseexperimental findings revealthatthemaximumsolidverticalvelocityinthespout occurs nearthegasinlet(z = 0.03 m, r = 0). Thismaximumvelocity was foundtobearound8.0m/swhichisunphysicalconsideringthe spouted bedgeometricalparameters,operatingparametersandthe type ofsolidparticlesused.Thiscanbeexplainedthroughasimple analysis basedonkinematicsandhydrodynamicsofsolidparticles using theprovidedexperimentalresults.Letusfirstmentionthat the measuredvoidagecorrespondingtoFig.3ispresentedinFig.8 in San Joséetal.(1998b). Itcanbeseenthatthemeasuredflownear the inletisverydilutewithavoidagethatexceeds STXmin =0.95 inthe region betweenthebedbottom z = 0 and z = 0.05 m.Weassumethe average verticalaccelerationoftheparticleis a.
