London—Brazilian sugar and ethanol producer Sao Martinho reported late Tuesday a net profit of Real 20.9 million ($11.6 million) for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year ending March 31, down from Real 33.2 million the previous year. The company attributed the drop to higher operating costs, which increased to Real 42.5 million form Real 10.4 million. For fiscal year 2010, however, Sao Martinho posted a net profit of Real 93.2 million, reversing the net loss of Real 71.8 million reported the previous 12 months. It said the rise in full-year net profit was due to higher sugar prices, increased sugar sales and higher ethanol values in the Brazilian domestic market.
