Analysis of the structure of neoclassical tearing modes in ASDEX Upgrade

The structure of neoclassical tearing modes in ASDEX Upgrade is analysed by the temperature profiles of the associated magnetic islands. The electron temperature profiles are measured by electron cyclotron emission spectroscopy and are evaluated based on modelled temperature profiles. They are obtained from the numerically solved heat flux equation using realistically modelled helical magnetic fluxes and taking into account the fact that, in collisionless plasmas, the parallel heat transport is limited by the electron thermal velocity. The observed magnetic islands have a width of 6-8 cm and are asymmetric in accordance with our model for the perturbed flux. The nonlinear stability parameter Delta (1)(W) tends to have negative values. The observed temperature profiles exhibit substructures inside the magnetic islands instead of the theoretically expected complete flattening in the O-point region. [References: 8]
