CINCINNATI-Airborne releases of 1,3 butadiene and acrylonitrile from Lanxess Corp.'s thermoplastic manufacturing plant in Addyston,Ohio,pose a cancer risk 50 times greater for local residents,according to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency,which has ordered immediate emissions reduction.The order,issued Dec. 5,followed seven months of air quality sampling within the suburban Cincinnati community. Ohio EPA's data show average levels of the two volatile organic compounds could cause an additional five cases of cancer among 10,000 people with long-term exposure;"acceptable" background levels would add one additional case of cancer in a population of 1 million,the agency said.
