Legislation that would amend the Federal Insecticide,Fungicide,and Rodenticide Act to allow the United States to ratify three treaties controlling chemicals and pesticides was introduced in the Senate on Nov.17.Text of the legislation,which was introduced by Sens.Saxby Chambliss,(R-Ga.)and Tom Harkin CD-Iowa),was not available Nov.21.But according to floor statements the senators made,the bill would amend FIFRA to make that law consistent with requirements in:the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs);the POPs Protocol to the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution(LRTAP);and the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent(PIC)Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade.
