摘要

It will take some time for the automotive industry to rebound to its pre-2007 production levels - most players are now betting on 2013 or 2014 as the "magic number." In the meantime the industry is focusing on concepts for tomorrow: electric vehicles, new technologies for lightweight construction and emerging foreign markets as well as reflecting on its relatively good 2009 performance. Issues affecting the market today seem to have moved into the background, although they are crucial to plastics industry OEM suppliers. The sector is undergoing structural change as players circumnavigate economic problems and contend with the drive towards smaller and more compact vehicles as well as ecological demands. "We expect the European market to contract by about 10% in 2010," Renault COO Patrick Pelata said at the recent Geneva Auto Show, voicing the insecurity of the western hemisphere's automotive industry, which is growing increasingly dependent on China and to some extent India. Despite plans to revive Lada, Russia won't be a leading customer for OEM suppliers soon, and eastern European countries have been hard hit by the economic downturn. The US remains shaky while Detroit's "Big Three" players try to figure out how to make money, given the slender margins of smaller vehicles.
