A review covering 80 references presents recent studies on the controlled synthesis of poly (aliphatic ester)s (PAE's), mostly including poly (epsilon-caprolactone) and poly (L-lactide). In the introduction, general features and practical applications of PAE's the latter resulting mostly from ability of these polymers to (bio) degradation, are briefly discussed; polymerization methods leading to PAE's are also presented. Then, the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) and L,L-dilactide (LA), including thermodynamic and kinetic polymerizability of CL and LA is described. Finally, recently elaborated methods of synthesis, of poly (epsilon-caprolactone)s and poly (L-dilactide)s of various architectures, such as linear homopolymers, and star-shaped polymers are presented in a more detail.
