In this paper, we present the potential use of a novel and efficient adsorbent for basic dye removal from aqueous solutions. Wood sawdust (SD) as a waste biomaterial was first coated by polypyrrole to prepare a new nano-biocomposite (PPy/SD). PPy/SD was then treated with anionic surfactant of dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (DBS/PPy/SD) in order to increase the active sites of the sorbent for dye uptake, methylene blue (MB) a basic or cationic dye was employed as test probe. Adsorption experiments were conducted in nonequilibrium continuous system. The sorption performances of four selected adsorbents (SD, DBS/SD, PPy/SD, and DBS/PPy/SD) toward MB dye uptake were then compared. The effects of fundamental parameters such as initial pH value, influent dye concentration, flow rate and sorbent dosage on MB dye removal onto DBS/PPy/SD were investigated. Among the selected adsorbents, DBS/PPy/SD showed the highest sorption capacity. The adsorption data were then treated with Thomas dynamic adsorption model under various conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity of 166.65 mg g~(-1) was obtained for DBS/PPy/SD at optimal pH value of 10, 50 mg L~(-1) initial dye concentration, 3 mL min~(-1) flow rate, and 2.0 g adsorbent dosage with 11 cm bed depth. Regeneration of the adsorbent was possible with high performance without any considerable drop in sorption capacity after at least three adsorption/desorption cycles.
