In this study blended membranes of cellulose acetate (CA) for reverse osmosis (RO) were prepared by the embedding of polyethylene glycol (PEG600) as an additive at 8-10 wt. % to enhance desalination. The functional group analysis, thermal studies and morphology of these membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The permeation flux g/m2 hr. and salt rejection % for different contents of PEG600 in the membrane was studied by indigenously fabricated reverse osmosis pilot plant. The FTIR band in the result confirms the existence of CA and PEG600. Thermal analysis depicts that with the increase in the concentration of PEG 600 in the CA membrane the thermal stability significantly improves when compared with the pristine CA membrane. SEM images exhibit that the membranes made by casting dissolution method are dense in nature. Reverse osmosis desalination results showed that the membrane containing 10 wt. % of PEG 600 has the flux of 510.3 g/m~2 hr. and highest salt rejection % i.e. 97.6% for the feed water of known conductance comprising 3.5 wt.% NaCl in water at 40 ℃.
