"The most important environmental consequences of intensive animal husbandry are: The penetration of nitrogen, phosphates and potassium into the soil, the ground water and the surface water (eutrophication); the contribution to acid deposits of ammonia (acidification); adverse effects on the living environment, ecological systems, tourist areas and drinking water resources," said Arend Mijs of the Dutch Egg Handlers Association.
