摘要

Discovery of equine and porcine DNA in beef products has resuitedin one processor adopting DNA testing. Could ail processors now be facing increased demands from retailers? Meat processors in the UK and Ireland are facing calls for tighter regulationin the wake of the discovery of equine and porcine DNA in beef products. The company at the center of the storm has agreed to introduce voluntary DNA testing and a number of other measures to guarantee the origin of its meat supplies. Pressure on processors can only increase when one considers the economic and reputational damage resulting from the contamination. In the UK, Prime Minister David Cameron was quick to condemn retailers, not processors, saying: "It is worth making the point that ultimatelyretailers have to be responsible for what they sell and where it comes from."
