THE IMPACT OF China's recent socioeconomic transformation on health and mortality is a challenging research question. Radical socioeconomic reforms taking place in China since the late 1970s have generated enormous economic growth. Living standards even in poor and remote areas of the country have improved in comparison with a quarter of a century ago. This transformation, however, has been accompanied by negative developments. Two of them are particularly relevant to the issues I address in this article.
