摘要

TIMES ARE UNSETTLED in rural Malawi. Deaths from a new disease, AIDS, have provoked great uncertainty, as have the accompanying global and national prescriptions of behavior change. Many people are worried about becoming infected. But the prescribed straight-and-narrow channels to safe harbor--abstinence, fidelity, and condoms--are widely considered incompatible with long-standing conceptions of the good life, particularly the joys of sex. Thus, men and women in Malawi are collectively navigating theAIDS epidemic. In conversations with relatives, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and strangers, they publicly evaluate sources of risk and varieties of sexual pleasure, debate global and national prescriptions, and formulate local, and sometimes innovative, strategies of prevention.
