SURVEYS OF SEX RAIIOS among young children in East Asia, particularly in rural communities, reveal a deficit of females, often referred to as "missing girls" (e.g., Croll 2000; Das Gupta and Li 2000). As Susan Greenhalgh and Jiali Li point out, while such statistics document specific demographic situations, they are only the end of a story that involves longer-term and complex interactions between culture and political economy (1995: 604). In this article I build on a rich body of scholarship about g ender and reproduction in the Chinese countryside (Anagnost 1997; Bossen 2002; Cioll 2000; Davin 1990; Gates 1993; Greenhalgh 1995, 1996; Johnson 1996; Yan2002, 2003} to uncover some of that story for one county in the southeastern province of Jiangxi. T he discussion explores how gender bias in state population policies interacts with local culture. In particular I show that population policies introduce new sources of inequality into local culture while, conversely, gender inequalities embedded in cult ure influence population policy and practice, generating a two-way process that continually reinforces distortions in sex ratios.
