Computers will never replace the nose, eyes and ears on the farm, but as a management tool they are fantastic, says Nigel Joice, broiler producer and vice-chairman of the NFU poultry board. With 800,000 birds housed across 16 sheds, Mr Joice is one ofthe largest broiler producers in the UK. But along with this glory comes the stress of running a large-scale unit. He alleviates this pressure by using an on-farm computer recording system that monitors factors such as ventilation, bird number, feed consumption and bird weight. Each day, the system produces a spreadsheet on performance and mortality which he then compares against the breed guidelines.
