As more cities and communities explore deploying citywide wireless networks, they need to begin thinking about the right technology to meet the requirements of their various constituencies. City employees, public works and safety agencies, citizens, businesses, and tourists all have distinct needs and requirements. While Wi-Fi, a common choice in many citywide wireless "hot spots," is right for some cities, on its own it may not meet all the needs of municipalities that are expanding networks to accommodate industrial applications. Whether it's streamlining critical SGADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) processes or completely mobilizing the industrial workforce, networking technologies are emerging to deal with the various obstacles inherent in industrial settings- concrete walls, metal structures, and radio frequency, to name a few.
