PORK producers need to trim production to tighten supplies and gain a little price lift to offset higher feed costs so as to have a shot at a profit. Some analysts think a 4% to 5% production cut would do it. Those a bit more pessimistic on strength of demand, our ability to export pork and competition for the consumer's dollar think a production cut nearer 10% might be needed. On a positive note, if higher corn prices persist, soybean meal prices will likely soften as the livestock industry and others more effectively use ethanol coproducts as protein sources.
