WITH Monsanto's release of Genuity SmartStax and VT Double Pro corn products, most of the fuss was over the reduced refuge requirements. While that's great news, folks are starting to make noise over the advantage that comes with using multiple Cry proteins to protect against corn earworm. University of Illinois entomologist Mike Gray says traditionally, farmers have not tried to guard against earworm. Spraying multiple times around silking to protect sweet corn makes sense. But it hasn't made economic sense to spray grain corn.
