A Large Scale Cold Flow Model of FCC - Troubleshooting Tool for Commercial Units

The operational performance of a commercial Fluid Catalytic Cracker unit involves complex interactions between the various sub-systems in the reactor-regenerator section. The hardware designs of these sub-systems have undergone several innovations and modifications primarily to meet the challenges in terms of meeting environmental limits, increasing uplift on heavy feedstock and improving energy efficiency. In order to take advantage of these improvements in FCC technology, revamp/retrofit activities are being carried out in many commercial units. Moreover, for deriving maximum benefits, refiners continue to operate FCC units even beyond their design capacities thus affecting the performance of key hardware sub-systems in the reactor-regenerator section. Some of the common problems faced by the FCC units today are high catalyst losses from both the reactor, as well as regenerator; higher regenerator dense bed temperatures; high hydrogen in coke; bottoms circuit choking, etc. besides the catalyst circulation problems. For troubleshooting these operating problems of commercial units, a cold flow model facility provides a better understanding of the fluid-particle interactions of subject hardware system for carrying out the complete analysis and helps in providing effective solutions.
