A study was conducted to investigate the structure, bioactivity, and chemical synthesis of steroidal glycosides from the genus Ornithogalum. The steroidal glycosides from Ornithogalum plants, possessing a steroid with 4-6 carbocyclic or O-heterocyclic rings as the aglycon, was classified into four groups on the basis of the aglycon framework, such as cardenolide glycosides, cholestane glycosides, and spirostane. Many aglycons of cholestane glycosides from Ornithogalum plants contained a 16,23-epoxy hexatomic ring, and some form 24 abeo-cholestane by C-rearrangement so that cholestane glycosides was divided into common cholestane glycosides and rearranged cholestane glycosides. Eight new cardenolide glycosides were isolated from the leaves and bulbs of Ornithogalum boucheanum by a combination of column and droplet countercurrent chromatography (DCCC).
