Increasingly stringent environmental regulations placed upon transportation fuels necessitate innovative technologies for removing sulfur from petroleum fuels. The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed regulations to limit sulfur in diesel and gasoline to 30 parts per million (ppm) in the next decade. The cost of sulfur removal by traditional hydrodesulfurization rises sharply as the demand for lower sulfur levles in fuels increases.
