Superabsorbent resin (SAP) is a kind of functional polymer material which can absorbs hundreds, even more than thousand, times of water as much as its own weight with good water retention performance under pressure. Owning to its excellent properties, SAP has wide uses and prospects in such areas including hygiene, medical, food, cosmetic, soil amelioration, plant cultivation, packaging, construction materials etc., and received ever-increasing interest among the peoples. Nowadays, SAP comprised of poly (acrylic acid-sodium acrylate) can be achieved by the common polymerization methods including suspension polymerization, solution polymerization, grafting copolymerization and inverse emulsion polymerization. In this paper, we proposed an example of fast, easy controlled UV photopolymerization method in the synthesis of poly (acrylic acid-sodium acrylate) SAP. The effects of the photoinitiators, crosslinking agents, degree of neutralization and exposing time on the properties of thus-synthesized SAP were also studied.
