摘要

Rheology is among the more sensitive tools used to detect the effects of degradation. The melt viscosity of polymers is very sensitive to changes in the weight-average molecular weight, which in turn is particularly sensitive to changes in the higher molecular weight portion of the molecular weight distribution. The effect of chain scission is therefore easily detected as a decrease in the melt viscosity. The melt viscosity is even more sensitive to very small numbers of long-chain branches that may be created during degradation. Both chain scission and long-chain branching can occur during melt processing and the combined effect is what is detected rheologically. For most polyethylene resins of commercial interest, the dynamic rheometer is a sensitive and versatile choice to monitor degradation processes. This paper demonstrates the use of the dynamic rheometer to study the stability of various types of polyethylene resins. Applications using this methodology are briefly outlined and insights from these studies are shared.
