Mixed-valence compounds contain an element which, at least in a formal sense, exists in more than one oxidation state.~(1,2) This is a common phenomenon. Prussian blue, which has a cyanide-bridged Fe(II)-Fe(III) structure, was one of the first chemical materials to be described.~3 The mixed-valence character of some minerals provides the basis for their colr. Multiple-site metalloenzymes, which undergo multiple electron transfer, have mixed-valence forms.
