摘要

In May 2009 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported several cases in which children were accidentally exposed to testosterone through direct skin contact with an adult using testosterone gel (1,2). Eight girls and boys aged 9 months to 5 years experienced adverse effects, such as clitoris or penis enlargement, premature development of pubic hair, advanced bone age, increased libido, and aggressive behaviour (1).The symptoms generally regressed when exposure ended, but in several children, slightly advanced bone age and enlargement of the external genitalia persisted. Some children underwent unnecessary diagnostic procedures, and one child was hospitalised for surgery before the underlying cause of virilisation was identified.
