The international nonproprietary names (INNs) of antihypertensive drugs derived from clonidine, a synnpathomimetic alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist (or alpha-2 agonist), end in -onidine (1,2).As of 13 April 2010, 8 drugs of this type were included in the World Health Organization (WHO) list of INNs (3). Four of them are marketed in France: two for hypertension, clonidine and moxonidine; and two for ocular hypertension, apraclonidine and brimonidine. It is worth mentioning that the INNs of some alpha-2 agonists that are similar to clonidine end in -nidine: rilmenidine and tizanidine, for example (1,4).
