Some patients receive long-term treatment with proton pump inhibitors (1). In February 2009, the Australian pharma-covigilance system reviewed the fracture risk associated with this therapy (2). A Canadian study using data from a healthcare utilisation database showed an increase in hip fractures after 7 or more years of exposure to proton pump inhibitors (relative risk (RR) 4.55; 95% confidence interval (95% Cl): 1.68-12.29).
