摘要

Lithium is the standard drug used to stabilise mood in patients with bipolar disorder. Most of its adverse effects are dose-dependent. It is cleared by the kidneys. It has a narrow therapeutic margin.? According to a systematic review of dozens of clinical trials and studies conducted in a total of several thousand patients, lithium therapy is associated with an increased risk of hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, weight gain and reduced urinary concentrating ability. But according to the limited data available, renal failure is rare in patients receiving lithium. There have been too few studies on its cutaneous effects.? Lithium is teratogenic. There are insufficient data to determine the frequency of congenital cardiovascular defects in neonates exposed to lithium in utero.? In practice, it is essential to monitor blood lithium concentration, renal, thyroid and parathyroid function, and body weight in patients taking lithium.
