Anaphylaxis, a very rare but potentially life-threatening reaction, had been a special focus of attention by various agencies. Data pointing to a possible risk of autoimmune disorders, central and peripheral neurological disorders and thromboembolic events had been analysed and monitored, and no significant increase was found compared with the general population. One study, however, raised concerns about a possible risk of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (1).In late 2014, we again reviewed available data on the adverse effects of the two available HPV vaccines, using the standard Prescrire methodology (see page 128). We examined data contained in reviews of HPV vaccine safety published regularly by government agencies, results of new epidemiological studies, and the latest periodic safety update reports (PSURs) of post-marketing surveillance conducted by the companies concerned on behalf of health authorities.
