An expanding ring-shaped lesion. Erythema migrans is a red circular rash that begins with an ery-thematous papule at the site of the tick bite and gradually expands cen-trifugally, reaching at least 5 cm in diameter; the centre of the lesion gradually becomes lighter in colour, with a darker outer edge (1,2,4,6,7).Variants include: a triangular rash in the skin folds or a linear rash on a limb; absence of the central pale area or a rosette-like pattern; an indurated, ulcerated or vesicular centre; a purpuric or scaly rash; and a diameter less than 5 cm (1,4,6,7,9). Erythema migrans is usually painless or mildly pruritic, but some patients may experience a burning sensation.Smaller secondary annular skin lesions with less distinctive centrifugal expansion sometimes appear at a distance from the primary lesion. These multiple lesions, due to hae-matogenous spread of the infection, are rare in Europe (2,4,6).
