A year ago, we discussed several papers published in Preventive Medicine reporting "dismal levels of influenza vaccination" in the US before the H1N1 epidemic of 2009 (Morabia and Costanza, 2010). We also reported that just over one in five respondents of a US poll had been vaccinated against H1N1 by January 2010. The main reasons for not getting vaccinated were concerns about the safety of the vaccine and doubts about the seriousness of the epidemic. Thanks to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and National 2009 H1N1 Flu Survey (NHFS), we know now that the vaccination coverage for the 2009-2010 epidemic season among all US persons aged >6 months was 41.2% (or 123.3 million) for the seasonal influenza vaccination, and just 27.0% (or 80.8 million) for the H1N1 vaccination (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010a). Thus, even the modest goal of 50% coverage for the seasonal flu vaccination was not reached.
