摘要

In their innovative article, Gundersen et-al. (2009) explore the relationship between smoking menthol cigarettes and smoking cessation in Hispanic, black and white Americans. Despite the growing secularization of public education, media and government in American society, religion has repeatedly been shown to have a surprisingly strong inverse association with cigarette smoking (Gillum 2005). It may also be related to smoking cessation (Gillum et al. 2009). Religious involvement may be associated with social support, which may be associated with smoking cessation (Krause 2006; Lawhon et al. 2009). Yet it is rarely controlled for in studies of smoking. Unfortunately, Gundersen et al. likely had no information on religion in their data set. To determine whether religion is a potential confounderof the association reported by Gundersen et al. (2009), the relationship of frequency of attendance at religious services (FARS) and smoking menthol cigarettes in non-Hispanic (NH) black, NH white and Mexican American smokers was examined in another national health survey performed in 2005-2006 (Yeager and Krosnick 2010), as described below.
