Effect of pasture species on milk yield and milk composition.

One preliminary 10-day experiment in autumn 1994 and four 10-day experiments throughout the 1994/95 lactation were carried out to investigate the effect of pasture species on the yield, composition and total colour of milk from dairy cows. Five 1-hapaddocks were divided into five 0.2-ha strips and established in Trifolium repens cv. Grasslands Kopu, Lolium perenne cv. Yatsyn-1, Phleum pratense cv. Grasslands Kahu or Dactylis glomerata cv. Grasslands Kara. Sowing rates were 15, 8, 10 and 6 kg/ha, respectively. Thirty-two dairy cows were allocated across the 4 treatments, each treatment being cut so that cows were offered a similar allowance of green leaf material (maintaining a sward height of 6 cm for L. perenne and D. glomerata or 4 cm for T. repens and P. pratense). Cows grazing T. repens produced higher milk yields than cows grazing the other 3 pasture species, with cows grazing P. pratense and L. perenne producing more than those grazing D. glomerata. Cows grazing P. pratense produced milk with a higher fat content than the other 3 species, whereas grazing T. repens increased lactose content. Milk solids production was also highest on T. repens. Within the grasses P. pratense resulted in the highest milk solids production. These pasture species did not affect the total colour of milk. Grazing on L. perenne in the preliminary trial resulted in the greatest liveweight gain, but no significant differences in liveweight and condition score were observed in the trials run during 1994/95. It issuggested that it may be possible to manipulate milk composition by altering pasture composition rather than by processing methods.
