This review describes research carried out to manipulate the reproduction of sheep and goats using Melovine, a melatonin implant which received registration in France in 1995. Continuous administration of melatonin mimics conditions of short daylength. Alternation between long and short days is used to regulate the period of sexual activity. A subcutaneous melatonin implant was inserted in ewes 30-40 days before mating. This increased fecundity by 16 lambs per 100 ewes mated and brought forward thelambing date. Combining oestrus synchronization, AI and melatonin treatment increased fecundity by 30 lambs per 100 ewes. To produce out-of-season ram spermatozoa, daylength was increased by 1 h before the melatonin was implanted. This stimulated testisgrowth, sperm production, sexual behaviour and fertility. One month of long days followed by 1 month of short days induced elevated sperm production which lasted for several years. The same results were obtained with 1 month of 1 h extra daylight followed by 1 month of melatonin treatment. Photoperiodic treatment of male goats required 1 h extra daylength for 2 months before melatonin implant insertion. Mating was then carried out between 35 and 70 days after the end of the photoperiodic treatment. This produced about 80% of normal fertility levels and fertilization about 10 days after introduction of males. Alternation between long and short days produced increased sperm production which was maintained for >3 years.
